EXETER LIBARY, LOUIS KHAN
precedent study - explore a series of volumes, approaching thresholds & views.

location: budapest, hungary
year: year 3 winter 2013
duration: 3 weeks
We were looking at some deep plan examples collectively in helping us to experiment and explore a series of volumes, approaching thresholds and views.

We constructed a 1:50 model of the inner rings to test light, scale, tectonic and atmosphere formed from the enclosure. My group was particularly interested to explore the transition and relationship between the bookshelf area and the atrium.; - rows of stacked books with low ceiling level create a sense of enclosure, intimacy and calmness. which is in great contrast to the light-flooded atrium space, where all the activities and discussions happen. Khan also has successfully applied a rich palette of textures, varying volumes and pleasing geometries which greatly enhance the knowledge seeking experience in the library.
